There was a point in my our marriage that my wife and I didn't think we were
going to have kids. It's true that infertility is a common fear in newly married
couples, but after three years of trying we decided to move from passively
nervous to actively upset. Our frustration caused us to begin to ask the hard
questions about what causes infertility and which one of, if not both of us were
the source of this infertility.
Early on in our research we came across a condition called high prolactin or
otherwise known as Hyperprolactinemia. High prolactin is involved with 1/3 of
infertility cases and because it is very treatable, my wife and I hoped this was
the root to our problems. Prolactin is an important hormone breast milk
regulation. Higher amounts of prolactin trick the woman's body into thinking
that it is at a breast feeding stage causing the woman not to ovulate. Higher
prolactin levels will also cause the woman to become less interested sexual
relations, which severely reduces already diminishing chances of pregnancy. Men
also can suffer from high prolactin levels, causing libido issues.
When my wife found out that it was in fact her higher levels of prolactin we
immediately sought treatment. She was put on a course of Bromocriptine and
withing 6 weeks she began to ovulate. It wasn't soon after that she became
pregnant. Now we have three beautiful children. Despite our happy ending we
could have circumvented all the frustration from the beginning if we had done
our research and stayed informed of fertility issues.
